Assistant Director of Education at the Body In Mind Massage Institute

I believe massage therapy students learn best when the body leads and the mind follows. Before a muscle gets named, a pathology gets defined, or a landmark gets located, students should feel it, move through it, or encounter it in a way that makes the concept real. Naming comes second, as language for something already experienced.

This philosophy shapes everything I build, from a movement sequence that teaches spinal anatomy through yoga-based motion, to an activity that has students interview an organ system as if it could speak, to a pathology course that replaces high-stakes exams with an ongoing project built on teach-backs and role-play. My goal in every case is the same: strip away the fear and abstraction that so often surrounds clinical material, and replace it with direct, embodied, usable understanding

I take pathology in particular as a test case for this belief. Traditionally it is taught as memorization under threat of a bad grade, which produces students who can pass a test but freeze in front of a client. I have redesigned our pathology curriculum around critical thinking and application, so students practice the actual skill they will need: reasoning through what they are seeing and feeling in front of them, and knowing what belongs in a massage room and what does not.

I also believe curriculum should be a coherent system, not a stack of disconnected lessons. I build consistent structures across chapters and subjects so students experience a throughline rather than a patchwork, and so that as an instructor I can catch gaps or misalignments before they reach the classroom. Consistency in structure lets creativity happen inside the content, where it belongs.

Ultimately, I want students to leave my courses not just able to recite anatomy or list contraindications, but able to think like practitioners: curious, unafraid of complexity, and grounded in their own bodies as a source of knowledge.

Theresa is a massage therapy instructor and Assistant to the Director of Education at [school name], where her work spans curriculum development, instructional design, and operational coordination across Anatomy & Physiology, Kinesiology, and Pathology. She is known for a somatic-first teaching approach that asks students to feel and embody course material before naming it, a philosophy she has built into original activities such as an organ-system interview exercise and a movement-based spinal anatomy sequence.

Her most significant contribution has been a full redesign of the school's Pathology curriculum, shifting the course away from traditional exams toward a continuous, application-based Pathology Project centered on clinical reasoning rather than memorization. The redesign reflects her broader belief that pathology should function as a usable clinical tool, not a source of anxiety.

Theresa also serves as a key connective link between the Director of Education and the teaching team, managing scheduling, curriculum logistics, and cross-course alignment across the program.

In Your Words…

  • Her love for anatomy dripped off her and somehow made its way to me. ~Sherry Sadoff Hanck

When it came time for the Anatomy portion of our Yoga Teacher Training, I arrived much like I did to my high school science classes…unenthused and shut down. It's just never been my "thing." Theresa Macy came in with the exact opposite manner; she was energized and extremely open. Her love for anatomy dripped off her and somehow made its way to me. A smile would form on her lips and I came to know that smile as the precursor to her telling us something really cool about the body. She made anatomy interesting and cool. I found myself becoming more curious about things I previously took for granted but didn't give thought to how or why they worked. Theresa was an asset to my training, my yoga and my overall understanding of the bones I've housed my whole life but never really knew!

Working with Theresa on my wellness has certainly resulted in physical improvements, like increased range of motion, better balance, and release of muscle tension. But the real benefit comes from taking this journey alongside Theresa. She is my role model for how to craft a more positive and thoughtful alignment across body, mind, and soul. Because Theresa is educated in many wellness methods, she can provide custom healing solutions based on my changing needs. • I walk the golf course almost every morning and those trees have become familiar friends. So thank you Theresa. You gave me a gift. ~Marion Snipes

Hi Theresa, I have thought of you a few times today. I want you to know how much I appreciate you. Because of you, I am much more interested in trees than ever before. Sam and Susan were always champions of trees and I never absorbed their interest. Unfortunately. I could have learned a lot. But you brought it alive for me. You made the information important to me. I walk the golf course almost every morning and those trees have become familiar friends. So thank you Theresa. You gave me a gift.

  • She is a teacher and a valued partner in my practice to keep my body in good shape and maintain agency over my wellness. ~Terri Dautcher

The past several years of working with Theresa have helped me on multiple fronts. Regular sessions have helped me to improve my range of motion and flexibility, which contributes to my overall mobility… something I am committed to maintaining as I age. The specific cranial work she employed resolved a painful jaw issue that I had dealt with for years before she was able to fix the issue. Her willingness to explain my anatomy and physiology as she works, prompted by my questions, has materially increased my understanding of how my joints, muscles, fascia, and points of connection between tissue and bone operate. Theresa has helped me understand so much about how my body operates, and what I can do to proactively care for myself in my day-to-day activities. She is a teacher and a valued partner in my practice to keep my body in good shape and maintain agency over my wellness.
